Superintendent's Newsletters 2020-21

May 28, 2021

I am so honored to call Keystone Local Schools my home. This year has been challenging on so many fronts, and yet, through it all, you supported our District, staff, and students. You have been flexible and understanding, especially with regards to our calendar adjustments and remote learning. Many of you changed your work schedules, childcare, and more; we recognize and sincerely appreciate these sacrifices.

I also want to recognize our staff as they rallied to support the needs of our students and families. OUR teachers expanded their in-person classrooms as they held remote learning courses simultaneously. OUR administrative assistants patiently fielded hundreds of questions concerning COVID-19 safety measures, school schedules, and more. OUR food service department prepared free meals for all of our students, and bagged hundreds of breakfast and lunch meals for our virtual learners. OUR transportation department cleaned and sanitized buses, helped make barriers for classrooms, and worked together to ensure our bus services were available for our students. OUR maintenance department helped keep our students safe by extensively cleaning classrooms and offices at all three schools, in addition to making barriers and restructuring classrooms to meet social distancing standards. Lastly, OUR administrators supported staff as they navigated online and in-person learning, while ensuring both the physical safety of our buildings as well as the social and emotional needs of students.

Lastly, I also want to thank all of you for enduring the vast amount of all-calls I sent this year!

Because of your support, flexibility, patience, and understanding, our unified bond between the schools and the community became even stronger.

Thank you for helping ensure the success of our students and have a wonderful summer Wildcats!

We encourage you to read the Prevention Action Alliance’s recent publication, titled “Know! How to Combat Spring Fever.” According to the article, “The problem with spring fever is, when restlessness and impulsiveness rise, trouble tends to follow. It is common for young people to experience attitude changes and display acting-out behaviors. Additionally, schools see a drop in attendance this time of year, as well as their students’ ability to focus and stay on task.” Read the full publication @ Know! Parent Tip: How to Combat Spring Fever.

For the first time, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is asking consumers, not internet service providers, about their internet experience by completing a brief 2-minute survey. Now is the chance for your families to be heard. The FCC will use this data to improve their broadband availability maps. These maps will help internet service providers and governments understand where in Ohio internet service is most urgently needed and decide future funding of broadband services.

Families struggling with internet connectivity, and therefore unable to access the online survey, can call the Connectivity Champions for help! Connectivity Champions are helping families complete the online survey over the phone at 844-K12-OHIO.

Have an amazing weekend Wildcats! Keep up the good work as we are on the home stretch of this school year!

The Lorain County Public Health Department reported 0 new positive COVID-19 cases at Keystone Local Schools from January 11 – January 15. As a reminder, we have the COVID-19 case information updated daily on our website @ https://www.keystonelocalschools.org/about/news/1695873/covid-cases-breakdown.

We work closely with the Lorain County Health Department, and as such, we want to provide general information regarding the COVID-19 vaccination process. The Health Department began vaccinating individuals in the Phase 1a group in December. Individuals in this group include those at highest risk and hands-on healthcare workers. The full list of individuals in Phase 1a can be found @ https://coronavirus.ohio.gov/static/vaccine/lhd-guidance-covid-19-vaccine-lhds.pdf.

Vaccinations for individuals in the Phase 1b group maybe vaccinated in late January or early February. Phase 1b includes adults 65 years and older, adults who work in schools, and those living with conditions that make them more vulnerable to illness. The LCPH informed me that the earliest they will start vaccinating adults that work in schools is the week of February 1, 2021.

Vaccinations for Phase 2 individuals begin after Phase 1a and 1b. This group includes critical populations who choose to be vaccinated. In Phases 3 and 4, the vaccination will be available to all Ohioans.

LCPH is coordinating COVID-19 vaccine clinics for people who live or work in Lorain county and qualify for phase 1a or phase 1b. On their website, there is a sign-up option to be notified when clinics are available for Phase 1. Please use this helpful resource @ LorainCountyHealth.com/signup.

All of this information, in its full form, can be found of the Lorain County Health’s Department website @ https://www.loraincountyhealth.com/coronavirus?gtm_cardu=urgentcard.

*Please note: due to availability of vaccines, the Health Department may have to adjust the projected distribution.

Have a great weekend Keystone!

January 8, 2021

Thank you for your generous flexibility and continual support during this continually evolving and unpredictable school year. I would like to address questions concerning the necessity of the three proposed staff workdays that will precede the start of Semester II. It is important for us to transparently report how we will utilize the time and why the additional time is necessitated.

Firstly, as we have experienced as educators and you as parents and community members, this school year is far from normal. More preparation has been required than ever before. Much of this centers around the fact that we chose to give parents/students the option to engage in remote or face-to-face learning. In doing this, we knew we would have to allocate staff for specifically remote purposes and that many of our teachers would be teaching both virtual and face-to-face classes.

Secondly, teachers, paraprofessionals, and administrators have been giving up their planning time, lunches, and thus vastly extending their work hours to cover staffing shortages, from filling in for other teachers to monitoring buses, lunches, and covering all areas needed for us to be able to keep our buildings open for face-to-face learners.  Please use the following link to access a detailed description of the work that will take place from Jan 20-22: Agenda & Objectives Jan 20, 21, and 22, 2021.

We have also had many questions concerning the days required for quarantine. We follow the guidelines from the Lorain County Health Department, which states that students and staff must maintain a 14-day quarantine after coming into contact with a person testing positive for COVID-19. Please use the resources on their website for additional information @ https://www.loraincountyhealth.com/coronavirus.

Have a wonderful weekend Keystone, and again, thank you for your support and flexibility.

December 18, 2020

The Lorain County Public Health Department reported 10 (*updated 12/21) new positive COVID-19 cases at Keystone Local Schools from December 11 – December 18. The Health Department is performing contact tracing and will communicate with individuals they deem as high risk for exposure.

Our COVID-19 case numbers are updated daily on our website. Find this information @ https://www.keystonelocalschools.org/about/news/1695873/covid-cases-breakdown.

Thank you for your flexibility yesterday as our KHS students transferred to remote learning. The decision to have the high school students go remote was based on staffing shortages.

When we are remote, on days like yesterday and during the weeks after Thanksgiving break, our building staff continue to work hard. They made 288 additional plexiglass barriers, placing them throughout the middle school.  We will be placing similar barriers in our elementary and high school buildings.

The Lorain County Health Department has many resources to help families make safe decisions as they celebrate the holidays. By following these suggestions and guidelines, you can help minimize the risk for you and your loved ones. These resources are available on their website @  www.loraincountyhealth.com. Click on the following text to view their Holiday Season Safety Guide Flyer.

Have a wonderful weekend Keystone, and thank you again for your flexibility as we navigate through this unpredictable time.

December 11, 2020

During the past three weeks in which we have been remote, the Lorain County Public Health Department reported 17 new positive COVID-19 cases at Keystone Schools from Nov 20 – Dec 10.

We look forward to seeing our face-to-face learners back in the classroom on Monday, Dec 14.

The decision to transfer to the remote learning platform from face-to-face instruction, and vice-versa, focuses on the following primary indicators: staffing, the spread of COVID-19 in our schools, and guidance from the Lorain County Public Health Department, the Ohio Department of Health, and Governor DeWine. The principal reason for our transfer to remote learning during the past three weeks was due to the inability to fill needed positions with substitutes, which is occurring county and state wide. Our staffing levels continue to be tight, especially as we enter cold and flu season. Parents always have the option to transport their student to and from school. KeyCare services are also available. Learn more @ https://www.keystonelocalschools.org/parents/key-care or contact Key Care Supervisor April Asbury @ april.asbury@keystoneschools.org.

As we prepare to come back on Monday, please be diligent in checking your child daily for symptoms of illness. To protect everyone, students are not to be sent to school if they exhibit any symptoms of illness. Additionally, if your child has been exposed to someone who tested positive for COVID-19, you cannot send them to school until they have quarantined for 14 days. The CDC has allowed for the number of days to change in some cases, but Lorain County Public Health is still requiring students to quarantine for 14 days. I appreciate your support and strict adherence to the regulations set forth by the Health Department.

During the past three weeks, our building staff has been working hard on constructing and placing additional plexiglass barriers at the middle school.  We are placing similar barriers in our elementary and high school buildings.

Lastly, I would like to thank the attendees who participated in this week’s parent feedback forum. We discussed our transition to remote learning and the importance of barriers for face-to-face instruction. We also had valuable feedback from our parents of full-time remote learners. They expressed a desire for more live instruction when our in-class learners return. We sincerely appreciate these comments and concerns and will continue to do our best to make our teaching practices efficient and successful for all learners.

Have a wonderful weekend Keystone.

December 4, 2020 *UPDATE

I regret to inform you that due to sudden staffing issues, especially with transportation, we are unable to bring our students back to school next week. So we will continue with full remote learning for the week of December 7th - 11th.

Please understand that we want to bring our students back and believe we can do so safely. However, with our current situation we cannot staff appropriately for face-to-face learning.

We will continue to evaluate our staffing situation next week. We will let everyone know our plan for the week of December 14th by the end of the day next Friday, December 11th.

We understand that this is a difficult situation for all. As both a father and an educator I do not take this decision lightly. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we continue to navigate through the pandemic.

November 24, 2020

Thank you all so much for working with us this week to adjust to remote learning. It is our intention to resume face-to-face classes on Monday, Dec 7. Please use the next two weeks to get healthy and remember to practice the recommendations from the Lorain County Health Department: mask up, back up, and wash up.

Have a great Thanksgiving Keystone!

UPDATE as of 4pm on Nov 20

On Friday, Nov 20, the Lorain County Health Department recommended Keystone Schools transfer to a remote learning environment, beginning on Monday, Nov 23 with the projected return date of Monday, Dec 7.

We have always followed the recommendations of the Lorain County Health Department, and we will continue to do so.

From Sept 7 - Nov 12, we only had 5 confirmed COVID-19 cases. This week alone, 13 new cases have been reported. In addition, over 40 students along with a number of staff members have been quarantined. With the growing numbers, staffing has continued to be difficult to manage. We cannot have face-to-face learners without enough staff members to cover classes.

Our remote building plans are now in effect. Your child’s administrators and teachers are prepared for this transition and are available to answer questions and address concerns.

Both nationwide and locally, the increase in cases is largely due to COVID “burnout.” People are not following safety measures, like social distancing, limiting group gatherings, wearing face masks correctly, and consistently washing their hands.

We need YOU to help us combat the spread of the virus by following the recommendations of medical professionals. This is why the projected date of return is Monday, Dec 7. The LCHD advised that a span of two weeks, in which everyone takes appropriate precautions, can decrease the number of positive cases. Let’s work together to ensure a safe and healthy future for our students, staff, families, and community members.

November 20, 2020

The Lorain County Public Health Department reported 13 new positive COVID-19 cases at Keystone Local Schools from November 13 – November 20 at noon. The Health Department is performing contact tracing and will communicate with individuals they deem as high risk for exposure.

As you know, we experienced an increase in the number of positive cases at Keystone. For the majority of cases this week, the Health Department traced the spread of the virus to out-of-school get togethers. With the numbers going up in Ohio and Lorain County, we expect we will have more people testing positive and/or quarantining.

This week there was speculation that Governor DeWine was going to postpone or cancel winter interscholastic sports; he did not. However, contact tracing specifically with basketball is very difficult. If one basketball player tests positive for COVID-19, their entire team, along with any team they played when exposure was possible, must be quarantined. The Lorain County Public Health Department requires the quarantine to last for 14 days even if a student is tested and has a negative result.

You may notice that schools across different counties or even in Lorain County are handling COVID-19 cases differently. This is because each county is led by its own health department. In addition, no two situations are identical. At this point, exposure at Keystone Schools has been minimal as the Health Department has stated that cases are being spread at events that occur outside of the school day. At Keystone, we follow the safety protocols to minimize exposure. Please continue to treat any individual you come into contact with as a potential carrier.

With the Thanksgiving holiday approaching, we encourage you to review the Health Departments “Tips for a Safe Holiday Season” available @ Lorain County Health Department Holiday Season Safety Tips and Reminders.

Thank you for all you are doing in following these safety measures. Together, we can do our part to minimize exposure and keep our children, parents, families, and community members safe and healthy.

November 13, 2020

The Lorain County Public Health Department reported 2 new positive COVID-19 cases at Keystone Local Schools from November 6 – November 12. The Health Department is performing contact tracing and will communicate with individuals they deem as high risk for exposure. Any person testing positive must quarantine until cleared to return to school.

Following the recommendation of Lorain County Health Commissioner Dave Covell, we will not share the name or other identifiable information of the individuals who have tested positive for COVID-19.

In recent meetings, Covell stated that case numbers, thus far, are not representative of the cases spread at the school as the majority of the cases are spread outside of school, often during family get togethers, parties, holiday celebrations, etc. He reiterated that we should always treat everyone we come into contact with as a potential carrier.

We discussed this and addressed other questions from parents during our feedback forum on Monday, Nov 9. Virtual attendees asked questions about sending their children back to school after learning remotely during the first semester. We discussed our safety measures, including barriers, face mask requirements, plexiglass, social distancing, and cleaning protocols.  The purpose of the safety measures is to safeguard against the spread of the virus. If a student tests positive, it does not mean it will spread in the school if everyone follows the safety protocols.

They also posed questions about our Semester II decision deadline of Friday, November 16. They expressed a desire to extend the deadline to occur after parent/teacher conferences. As a result of this conversation, we have extended the Semester II decision time to Sunday, November 22, 2020.

As always, we appreciate your feedback and look forward to our upcoming parent forum in December. Have a great weekend Keystone!

November 6, 2020

The Lorain County Public Health Department reported 1 new COVID-19 case at Keystone Schools for the week of October 29 – November 5.

Thank you all for signing up to our Feedback Forum, scheduled for this Monday, Nov 9 from 6-7pm. We had a very significant response, but at this time, the attendee number is capped at 25. You will receive an email from me today, letting you know if you were among the first 25 individuals who signed up. If you do not receive an email TODAY, I hope you will continue to express interest in our next forum, which will take place next month. Thank you all again for your interest.

From November 6 – 22, an online form MUST be completed if you are changing the CURRENT learning platform for your child. This information is for the second semester, beginning on January 18. If you are NOT changing your child’s learning platform, you DO NOT need to fill out the form; your child’s remote or face-to-face status will remain the same. Access additional information and the form @ https://www.keystonelocalschools.org/about/news/1694928/semester-ii-learning-platform-decision.

As an administrator, former teacher, and parent myself, I know what a tough decision this is, especially with the unpredictable nature of the COVID-19 virus. I sincerely appreciate your understanding.

Congratulations to our KHS students who were inducted today into the prestigious National Honor Society. This induction exemplifies their commitment to the four pillars of the organization: character, scholarship, leadership, and service. Congratulations to the 19 new NHS members: Kortney Bartlome, Lillian Cassell, Alexandria Corn, Braden Cuson, Abigail Drake, Brynn Duta, Stephen Faltay, Luke Forthofer, Kennedy Kerr, Caleb Lekki, Charles Magel, Hannah Maitland, Virgina Reaser , Jakob Rich, Aiden Rodachy, Tori Storrow, Johnathon Wargo, Hali Woods, and Erin Yates.

Have a great weekend Wildcats!

October 30, 2020

The Lorain County Public Health Department reported 1 new COVID-19 case at Keystone Schools for the week of October 22 – October 29.

From November 6 – 22, an online form MUST be completed if you are changing the CURRENT learning platform for your child. This information is for the second semester, beginning on January 18. If you are NOT changing your child’s learning platform, you DO NOT need to fill out the form, and your child’s remote or face-to-face status will remain the same. The form will be on our website and linked to our social media pages. It must be completed by November 22. We know making these decisions is hard, with the unpredictability of the future; however, we need this data to plan for the second semester.

As we all look forward to Halloween festivities, the Lorain County Health Department reminds us there is no such thing as zero risk for COVID-19 exposure. They have issued COVID-19 reminders and tips for Halloween activities: use sanitizer and wash your hands often, wear masks correctly, eat only factory-wrapped treats, maintain social distancing, and avoid having children grab candy out of a bowl. A fun alternative to this would be to build a candy slide with PVC pipes to give out treats. These tips and other health reminders can always be found on their website @ https://www.loraincountyhealth.com/covid19resources.

Lastly, Election Day is THIS Tuesday, November 3. If you have an absentee ballot, it must be postmarked by November 2 and received no later than November 13. If you choose to return your absentee ballot in person to your polling precinct, you must do so by November 3 at 7:30pm. Polling locations can be found at https://voterlookup.ohiosos.gov/voterlookup.aspx. Remember to bring a current ID to your polling location. Acceptable forms of ID’s are available @ https://www.usa.gov/voter-id.

Have a great weekend Keystone!

October 23, 2020

The Lorain County Public Health Department reported 0 new COVID-19 cases at Keystone Schools for the week of October 16 – October 22.

As we are seeing COVID case numbers rise throughout the country, we want to ensure you are aware of our Plan B. There are two main factors that would precipitate Plan B. An increase in COVID cases at Keystone, building or classroom-wise, and staff absences.

We have outlined some plausible situations that would necessitate Plan B. If our staff cannot attend school, and we cannot get enough substitute coverage, we cannot have face-to-face learners in the school building. If this occurs, and we have enough coverage at KES and KMS but not enough at KHS, only KHS will go remote for that day(s). KES and KMS learners will still report as usual.

This policy also applies to COVID cases. All three buildings will not go remote if the COVID cases are tied to one classroom or building. For example, if the COVID cases at KMS necessitate remote learning for a day, KES and KHS students will still attend classes as usual. This is not the same as closing due to a Coronavirus concern. In the event of these situations, you will be notified via the all-call/text system, social media outlets, and website by 6am.

In terms of transportation, if we do not have enough bus drives for a particular day, we will adjust our routes. This may entail changing the time your child will be picked up, or you can always choose to drop your student off. You will be informed of this the same way as detailed in the preceding paragraphs.

Thank you for understanding the necessity of this plan, and please consider signing up to be a substitute teacher or bus driver @ https://www.applitrack.com/nccohio/onlineapp/. PLEASE read my full press release regarding this on our website @ https://www.keystonelocalschools.org/about/news/1691781/planning-ahead.

Red Ribbon Week will take place from October 26-October 30.  This is a week for students to take a visible stand against drugs.  At KES, KMS, and KHS, students can show their personal commitment to a drug-free lifestyle by signing a Red Ribbon Week Pledge and participating in spirit week.  The themes for each day next week are on the school homepages. Visit https://www.redribbon.org/ to learn more about the Red Ribbon Week program.

Have a great weekend Keystone!

October 16, 2020

The Lorain County Public Health Department reported zero new COVID-19 cases at Keystone Schools for the week of October 6 – October 15.

I would like to thank the individuals who attended our virtual feedback forum this Wednesday. Our parents, grandparents, and guardians in attendance were very complimentary of our teachers and expressed appreciation for the way we have navigated this year’s educational platform.  Thanks to their feedback, we are also able to identify ways to adjust our online learning to meet the needs of our students. Our next forum will be held in November, with the specific date and time forthcoming.

Our Food Service Department, led by Director Jody White, continues to do an outstanding job packing week-long breakfast and lunch meals for our online learners. Over the past two weeks, they have serviced over 180 students. Following meal guidelines for schools, breakfast items include two grains, fruit, and a milk. Lunch includes one meat/meat alternative (yogurt or cheese), a fruit, vegetable, grain, and milk. View our weekly menus and nutrition information @ https://www.keystonelocalschools.org/departments/food-services.

The Lorain County Health Department provides a plethora of information about COVID-19 related resources, lists of vaccine clinics in our area, and a multitude of additional health related materials. To access this information, navigate to https://www.loraincountyhealth.com/vaccines.

We encourage you to check out our live streaming of Keystone sports! This stream also includes awesome performances during the games by our KHS band and cheerleaders. Access these live streams @ https://sportscopelive.com.

Keystone Families: If a member of your immediate household is sick and actively being tested for Covid-19, please do not send siblings or other members of the household into school until that individual's results come back.

Lastly, we are continually seeking part-time bus drivers, lunch monitors, and substitute teachers. Bus drivers receive free training. Please consider becoming a part of the Keystone family by viewing and applying for these positions @ https://www.applitrack.com/nccohio/onlineapp/.

Have a great weekend Keystone!

October 8, 2020

The Lorain County Public Health Department reported 1 new COVID-19 case at Keystone Schools for the week of September 28 – October 5. While we must protect the privacy of individuals involved, we are committed to transparently relaying information concerning COVID-19.

We are working directly with the Lorain County Health Department and Commissioner Dave Covell. Following protocol, the Health Department performed contact tracing, notifying any individuals who may have been directly impacted by this situation. Any person testing positive must quarantine until cleared to return to school by the Health Department. We will continue to follow all COVID-19 related safety procedures. The safety measures and protocols we follow for each school are on our website @ https://www.keystonelocalschools.org/about/news/1687474/safety-measures.

We received grant money from The Ohio Department of Education to provide WiFi services to our students who qualify for Free and Reduced Lunches. The free WiFi is on a first come/first serve basis and will be offered to families until the grant funds are used. View more information and apply for the program @ https://www.keystonelocalschools.org/about/news/1692217/wifi-program.

We are hosting monthly virtual meetings to obtain your feedback concerning virtual learning, school policies, and more. Questions, comments, or concerns for specific teachers or about individual students will not be addressed by the group. Answers to these types of questions can be obtained by contacting your child's teacher and/or building administrator. Each session is limited to the first 25 individuals who sign up.

Our first session is on Wednesday, October 14 from 6-7pm. Please sign up @ Parent Feedback Forum.

Have a great weekend Keystone!

October 2, 2020

The Lorain County Public Health Department reported 0 new COVID-19 cases at Keystone for the week of September 21 – September 28.

During our first week of providing free breakfast and lunch for our virtual learners, we serviced 101 students. I would like to thank Jody White, Food Service Supervisor, and her staff for smoothly running the meal pick-up and for preparing 1010 to go meals. Virtual meal sign up for the coming week began today at 8am and will conclude Tuesday, Oct 6 at noon. Please remember that in order to receive these meals, VIRTUAL learners must fill out a form every Tuesday by noon. The meal sign up form is deactivated on Tuesdays at noon and reactivated for sign ups on Fridays at 8am. This week, meals will be distributed on Thursday, Oct 8 and Friday, Oct 9 from 9:15-10:30. Students do not have school on Friday (10/09), but meals will still be distributed as scheduled.

In my meetings with superintendents across Lorain County, we have discussed plausible staffing issues due to illness or lack of substitute teachers. Per Health Department guidelines, staff cannot enter the workplace if they are experiencing flu-like symptoms. If staff vacancies cannot be filled due to the substitute shortage across EVERY district in Lorain County or other factors, we will hold remote learning classes for all of the students in the building that is understaffed. This is not the same as closing due to a Coronavirus concern. PLEASE read my full press release regarding this on our website @ https://www.keystonelocalschools.org/about/news/1691781/planning-ahead.

As we continue to delve into this school year, we would like to provide additional outlets for you to share your feedback, comments, concerns, and questions. We want to give YOU a voice. Thus, we are hosting a new platform to solicit this information in the form of a monthly virtual meeting. Please read the full article about our PARENT FORUM @ https://www.keystonelocalschools.org/about/news/1691759/parent-forum.

Have a wonderful weekend Keystone!

Happy Friday Keystone!

The Lorain County Public Health Department reported 0 new COVID-19 cases at Keystone for the week of September 7 – September 14.

Google is having problems with their educational platform, our primary resource for our virtual learners. We have reported these issues to Google and many other districts are experiencing these issues and reporting them as well.

We understand the frustration this causes for all those involved: our students, parents, and teachers. Please hang in there with us as we continue to report these issues. Google has responded, and their engineers are working on this problem and addressing it as a high priority.

We will continue to offer free breakfast and lunch for all students throughout the fall semester. Free breakfast items include two grains, fruit, and milk. Lunch includes one meat/meat alternative (yogurt or cheese), a fruit, vegetable, grain, and milk. Thank you to Jody White, our Food Service Supervisor, and her staff for the incredible job they have done in handling this increase to our school breakfast and lunch.

Have a great weekend Keystone!

COVID Update & Superintendent's Newsletter

The Lorain County Public Health Department reported positive COVID-19 cases amongst the staff. The Health Department determined there was no exposure at the school; thus, no one required quarantine. Any person testing positive must quarantine until cleared to return to school by the Health Department.

Although I dislike beginning my newsletters in this fashion, I want to assure parents we are transparently reporting COVID-19 cases at our District. Thus, throughout this school year, my newsletter will begin with the COVID update, followed by our school news, events, accomplishments, and more. With that being said, GREAT WORK to all of our students, staff, parents, and families on an awesome first week of school! The transition back, even after a six-month hiatus, went very smoothly!

The USDA announced free breakfast and lunch for all students throughout the fall semester. This will start on Monday, Sept 14 at all three Keystone Schools. Free breakfast items include two grains, fruit, and milk.

Lunch includes one meat/meat alternative (yogurt or cheese), a fruit, vegetable, grain, and milk. If you pack a lunch, and you need an individual item, such as a milk, it will need to be purchased for .50. A la carte items are not included.

Lastly, please join me in welcoming the newest members of our Keystone family, this year’s kindergarteners, on Monday, Sept 14.

Have a great weekend Keystone!

Keystone Family,

As we prepare to welcome our students back next Tuesday, I want to take this opportunity to address Coronavirus concerns and explain to you the process we will use to communicate positive cases.

 Q. What safety measures are in place at Keystone?

Our safety measures include spatial barriers, face mask requirements, plexiglass, social distancing, and cleaning protocols.

Q. Will we be contacted if someone tests positive at Keystone?

Early each week, I will send communication and share with you any positive cases at Keystone. Legally, however, due to privacy laws, we cannot give the name, grade level, or any other identifiable information concerning positive results.

Q. Will I know the number of positive cases at Keystone?

The number of cases can be considered identifiable information and has the potential to violate privacy laws.

Upon recommendation from the Lorain County Health Commissioner Dave Covell, we will not provide specific numbers.  Covell stated that case numbers are not representative of the cases spread at the school.

For example, individuals may gather at an event outside of school in which 5 people contract/spread the virus. This could lead to the assumption that the virus is spreading at school when in reality it is not.

We will always follow Covell’s guidance and recommendations in all situations related to the Coronavirus and the health and safety of our students.

Q. What if someone tests positive in my child’s class?

The purpose of the safety measures is to safeguard against the spread of the virus. If a student tests positive, it does not mean it will spread in the school if everyone follows the safety protocols.

When there is a positive case with an exposure risk, the Lorain County Health Department will contact you if quarantine is necessary.

Q. What should I do if my child tests positive?

Any person testing positive must quarantine until cleared to return to school. The Health Department created a DECISION TREE to address these questions. View this document @ https://drive.google.com/file/d/1GROdexVTrXiPTfFhxM0WUPnj5qmcRG4q/view.

Q. Do I need to keep my child home if they have just one or a few mild
symptoms? How do I know the difference between a regular cough, cold,
    flu and coronavirus?

The Lorain County Health Department addresses these questions @ https://www.loraincountyhealth.com/covid19resources.

Q. Have there been any positive cases within the District?

Yes. These cases have been addressed in the manner described in the previous questions.

Q. How do I prepare my student for the new safety mandates at school?

Navigate to https://www.loraincountyhealth.com/covid19resources. This site shows the proper way to wear a mask and also offers ways to prepare your child for school.

Talk to your child about their roles and responsibilities concerning safety measures both in and outside of school.

PLEASE stress to your child the mindset that anyone they come in contact with, whether during or after school, is a carrier of Coronavirus.

The Lorain County Health Department has this information and more on their website @ https://www.loraincountyhealth.com/coronavirus.
