Technology Update: 1:1 Chromebooks

Technology Update: 1:1 Chromebooks

Throughout the summer and this fall, to fulfill objectives set forth in our strategic plan, our technology department has streamlined our process of providing a Chromebook for each student (1:1). We strongly encourage you to read this document to become familiar with our policies, procedures, and rationale for Chromebook distribution. *Please note that as circumstances and needs change, this plan may be adjusted accordingly.

  • Students in grades 1-12 will receive a school-issued Chromebook with a yearly $30 technology fee. *See below for Chromebook policy for kindergarten students.
  • This yearly fee provides coverage for the costs of technology infrastructure needs, and aids in minor repairs, such as keys falling off.  Major repairs, such as a cracked screen or broken motherboard will be covered ONE time per year per student. Any additional substantial damages will be charged to the student.
  • Chromebooks will be replaced during students’ 1st, 5th, and 9th grade years. This is because typically 4-5 years is considered the end of life of educational software licensing. Students can keep the original Chromebook at no additional cost or return it to the school.
  • Kindergarten students will follow a different process, as they will be issued a Chromebook at the beginning of the year and will return it at the end of the year. Kindergarten students will not be issued a technology fee.
  • Students in grades K-5 will have the option to store their Chromebook in the classroom on a daily basis.
  • Students are not permitted to use a personal computer, laptop, etc. in school. This is due to security reasons. With school issued Chromebooks, we can monitor, block, and trace students’ internet access. We cannot provide this same measure of security on personally-owned devices.
  • Students will have the option to keep their Chromebook at the end of fourth, eighth, and twelfth grade. Otherwise, the Chromebook is the property of Keystone Local School District. Any student that withdraws from Keystone Schools must return the Chromebook unless it is the one they are issued at the end of 4th, 8th or 12th grade.
  • Students attending the JVS on a full-time status will not be issued a Chromebook. Students attending the JVS on a part-time status will be issued a Chromebook and will be responsible for a technology fee.
  • Students attending Lorain County Community College (LCCC) on a full-time status will not be issued a Chromebook. Students attending LCCC less on a part-time basis will be issued a Chromebook and will be responsible for a technology fee.

If you have any questions concerning the Chromebook distribution and its policies, please contact your child’s school principal or Superintendent Dan White.
