As we near the beginning of our next calendar year, we prepare our school calendars for the 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 school years. Input from our community is important to us and thus we are seeking your feedback on the proposed calendars. The primary difference in the proposed calendars involves the division of the spring break holiday and Easter. Spring break would be the standard week, and students would still have Good Friday and Easter Monday off.
This year, we return from spring break and only have four weeks left of school. The reason for this is because we currently partner spring break with Good Friday and Easter, and they are later this year. We feel it would be beneficial for our students and our families if our spring break consistently occurred at the end of the third quarter, rather than paired with the Easter holiday, as it has been in years past. We feel a division between the third and fourth quarters would provide time for our students to rejuvenate prior to the final 9-week grading period. Other facets of our rationale are detailed below.
- Having spring break at a similar point each year allows families to plan time together, just as they do for other routine breaks or traditions.
- Other local school districts that are already dividing spring break and the Easter holiday have reported positive feedback from families and students.
- It is beneficial for our students to have time to relax and rejuvenate prior to the start of the fourth grading period.
- Testing windows for school and state assessments would be consistent and fluent, not divided into both before and after the break.
