Kevin Minnich and Jerry Johnson Program Overview The KHS Bowling team is in its 9th year of competition. We are a member of the North Shore Bowling Conference, which includes a total of 14 local schools.
Keystone has consistently had great success with both the number of students who join our teams as well as their performances. We have enough athletes to maintain all four levels of teams; Varsity boys, JV boys, Varsity girls and JV girls. Players are selected through a two tryout process based on ability to bowl, but more importantly, coach-ability. It is imperative that bowlers have a positive attitude and are willing to be a team player. As with all high school sports we follow the OHSAA guidelines and students must maintain grades to meet eligibility. Our regular season starts in November with tryouts and practices and generally finishes at the end of January. We bowl two matches a week, Mondays and Wednesdays. Matches are held at a variety of participating bowling centers in the area. Being a club sport students are responsible for their own transportation to and from matches, busing is not available. Although we are a “club” sport bowlers can earn their varsity letter. The team participates in several tournaments starting with the JV conference tournament and the Varsity Conference tournament. These are followed by the State Sectional tournament for Varsity level teams. All teams in the conference participate in these tournaments regardless of their season record. Teams can then qualify to go to the State District tournament and then on to the State Finals. In addition to teams progressing, individual bowlers can qualify to continue on should their teams not make it. Finally, there is a conference scholarship tournament where approx. $2500.00 is given away. Our season wraps up with an awards banquet for all fourteen teams. Keystone Varsity boys teams have progressed to State Districts in all five of the past seasons. The girls’ varsity progressed for the first time in the 2008-2009 season. A Keystone team has yet to progress to the State level, however, Tyler Minnich went to State his junior year during the 2007-2008 season. JV Girls finished the regular season with a 12-1 record and went on to win JV tournament. The varsity girls finished the regular season with a 12-1 record and also won the conference tournament for the third year in a row. Keystone varsity boys wrapped up the regular season at 9-4; finished 2nd in the conference. The JV boys finished at 8-5.
